Celebrate Diwali festival of lights

Early in the morning, we had a puja at the temple, which was my favourite part of the day. During the night, we exploded firecrackers on millions of other Delhi Delhi-eats and soared into the night sky. It created deaf and dangerous smoke, but I appreciated the excitement people were celebrating. I have celebrated Diwali in many other places in India and now I usually want to stay away from. Delhi Pollution from firecrackers and firecrackers is too much for me. I recommend celebrating in a small city like Jaipur or Rishikesh.

Delhi has banned the private use of firecrackers and firecrackers unless they are environmentally friendly. I am in Delhi for Diwali in 2019 and the pollution is not the same as in previous years - there are very few people who light firecrackers and firecrackers as compared to previous years. However, in the days that followed the pollution was terrible due to weather patterns and palm fronds. Literally breaking the record. Wear a mask!

Why we Celebrate Diwali In India, History, Significance

Celebrate Diwali the festival of india

This story is very popular when it comes to the description of the Diwali festival. According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, Lord Rama, his brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita had to go into exile for 14 years. During this exile, Sita was abducted by Ravana, the evil king of Ceylon. Now, after many challenges and trials, Lord Rama finally conquered Lanka and saved Sita. On the new moon day of the Hindi month of Karthika, Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana return to their native Ayodhya. Thousands of Ayodhya residents lit lanterns and lamps to celebrate the victory. This Diwali is also known as Diwali, which means that the people of Ayodhya line the lanterns (avail) to welcome their king. After that, the same day is celebrated in full online. Fireworks and dials create great excitement during this festival.

The Significance of Diwali

Diwali is a festival celebrated by Hindus all over the world with great joy and enthusiasm. It’s time to clean the house and reunite with neighbours, family and friends. Diwali is a time to share sweets with each other and remember that God’s light always transcends darkness.

Diwali is celebrated differently in different parts of India. It is the most famous of all the Hindu festivals. It falls in the Hindu month of Karthik - October / November (no moon).

When is Diwali

Diwali festival of lights

Diwali does not take place on a fixed calendar date, which varies from year to year because the date is determined by lunar cycles. Diwali is celebrated on the night of the new moon in the Hindu month of Kartik. 2020, Diwali date this year is November 14th. There are actually five days of festivities around Diwali,. Every day has a special significance and special rituals are practised - these rituals vary from region to region in India. The name of the festival also changes. I have listed below as the names of the festivals are known in some parts of North India.

  • November 12: Govatsa Dwadashi. Cows are worshipped on this day.
  • November 13: Dhanteras. Traditionally, on this auspicious day, people buy household items and gold.
  • November 14: Diwali / Lakshmi Puja. It is the primary day of the festival, where people worship Lakshmi at home and in the evening do light dials around their houses.
  • November 15: Govardhan Puja. A day to honour Lord Krishna.
  • November 16: Bhaya Dooj. Celebration of the relationship between siblings.

Where is the Best Place in India to celebrate Diwali?

Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated events in India. Cities, towns and villages across the country are adorned with light and rangoli artefacts. If you are looking elsewhere especially to enjoy Diwali, here are the top five destinations in India:

  • Jaipur Tourism - A Market for Special Diwali Feasts and Marketing
  • Varanasi - The most spiritual for Diwali
  • Tourist places in and around Kolkata
  • Amritsar Tourism - For Sikh Temples That Shine During the Night
  • Goa - Devil statues on the beach for Diwali

Read more about the Cities. What each of these destinations has to offer  at Diwali

Jaipur
The Pink City in Jaipur is heading towards Diwali for the first time with lights illuminating government buildings, markets and private homes. The annual competition for the best clothing market ensures that it is kept creative with the multi-coloured lights used to create colour patterns. Food stalls abound with special Diwali dinners, and women buy the famous Johari Bazaar for new jewellery to celebrate. If you want to shoot all the panoramic views of Jaipur, go to Naharng Fort for the night.

Varanasi
Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in India, is a spiritual place every day of the week, but during Diwali, the riverside city takes on a whole new meaning. Extensive devotional rituals called Aarti are performed by lighting candles and oil lamps on the banks of the Ganges. Two weeks after Diwali, there is a huge Diwali procession and the chanting of Hindu deities through the streets. Another highlight of Diwali in Varanasi is the big fireworks display.

Kolkata
Unlike other parts of India where Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on the occasion of Diwali, the city of Kolkata pays homage to Goddess Kali - the Divine Guardian and Mother of the Universe. Kashi Puja (a festival dedicated to Kashi and celebrated all over West Bengal) is equivalent to Diwali, a combination of two events. Devotees visit many Kali temples in Kolkata and offer flowers, sweets, rice and peas. The streets are adorned with colourful statues representing Kashi and simple candles, lanterns and electric lights that you associate with Diwali.

Amritsar
Although Diwali is traditionally considered a Hindu festival, the Sikh people of Amritsar do not celebrate the festival with special enthusiasm. The magnificent Golden Temple is the centre of Sikhism in the country and on the occasion of Diwali, magnificent fireworks displays take place in the sky above the temple. Candles and lanterns adorn the edge of the temple lake, while bulbs are lit in front of the sacred building.
